ENGLISH VERSION )
Once again, the Lunar New Year is coming to us. In the early 80’s,
the Lunar New Year was not very popular. There was no festival, no parade
and very little New Year merchandise displayed in stores and
supermarkets. However, as the Chinese community gets bigger in recent
years, the Lunar New Year becomes more and more popular. There are
parades, dragon dances and festivals to celebrate the New Year. The New
Year atmosphere is even more obvious when we step inside Chinese
Supermarkets with traditional New Year merchandises such as red envelope,
colorful New Year candies, flowers and fruits.
I thought I missed the Lunar New Year atmosphere when I first came
here in the early 1980. However, after the Lunar New Year gets more and
more popular recently and the New Year atmosphere gradually restored, I
still found something missing. I then realized it was not the New Year
atmosphere that I was missing. I was missing the feeling of celebrating
the Lunar New Year in my hometown Nhatrang,
Vietnam.
I missed the closure of Phan Boi Chau Street one week prior to the New
Year just for the New Year Market; I missed the mini festivals in Cho
Dam; I missed the school “big clean up” day before New Year time off; and
I especially missed the excited feeling in school one day before the big
2-week off to celebrate the New Year.
I surely miss the sweet memories I had when I celebrated the Lunar
New Year in Nhatrang. Fortunately, I still have a good group of Khai Minh
classmates to celebrate the Lunar New Year together in Los Angeles.
